Classified as an ascomycete, this fungus exploits the host's foliage to complete its reproductive cycle, often leading to localized tissue damage.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of necrotic spots on the leaf surface. Within these lesions, the fungus develops ascostromata, which serve as specialized structures for the production and release of ascospores. As the disease progresses, the leaf tissue surrounding these spots may yellow or wither, eventually leading to premature abscission of the leaves.
