Ophiognomonia is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for various infectious diseases affecting broad-leaved trees and shrubs. These fungi are notorious for causing leaf spots, shoot blights, and cankers, which significantly impact the vitality of forest and orchard trees. Understanding the biology of this pathogen is crucial for effective plant management.

The host range of Ophiognomonia includes various woody plants such as walnut, birch, oak, and maple. The pathogen primarily attacks leaves, petioles, and young succulent shoots. In the case of walnut, the fungus is associated with brown spot disease, which significantly affects tree health and nut production quality.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots on the leaves, which expand and coalesce, eventually leading to premature defoliation. The presence of minute black structures, known as pycnidia, within the lesions is a diagnostic feature. Shoot infections appear as sunken lesions or cankers that may girdle the branch, causing dieback.

The development of the disease is highly favored by high humidity, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures during the growing season. The fungus overwinters primarily in infected leaf litter and bark crevices. As conditions become favorable in the spring, the fungus releases spores that are spread by rain splash and wind to new, healthy leaves.

The impact of Ophiognomonia is significant, particularly due to the loss of photosynthetic leaf area, which weakens the tree. This reduced vitality makes trees more susceptible to environmental stress, pests, and other secondary diseases. Severe outbreaks can result in poor tree growth, dieback of the canopy, and major crop losses in nut-producing orchards.

  • Strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate primary inoculum sources.
