Description
Butternut canker is a devastating forest disease caused by the fungal pathogen Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum. It specifically targets trees in the Juglans genus, most notably the butternut tree (Juglans cinerea), causing the formation of lethal cankers on the stems and branches of the host plants.
The fungus is highly aggressive and infects trees of all sizes. By colonizing the bark and the cambium layer, the pathogen effectively girdles the tree. This disruption of the phloem and xylem prevents the transport of water and nutrients, which is the primary cause of tree mortality.
Symptoms are identified by dark, sunken areas on the bark that expand into perennial cankers. These cankers often release a dark, inky exudate during the growing season. As the disease progresses, the overlapping cankers eventually circle the entire trunk, leading to crown dieback and death.
The spread of the fungus is facilitated by moist weather conditions and mechanical wounding. Spores are primarily dispersed by splashing rain and wind, allowing the disease to move rapidly through dense stands. Once a tree is infected, it typically becomes a source of inoculum for neighboring trees for many years.
Effective disease management remains challenging, but practitioners follow these guidelines:
- Pruning and removing infected branches to reduce local spore load.
- Sterilizing pruning tools between cuts to prevent mechanical transmission.
- Monitoring the orchard or forest stand for early signs of sunken bark lesions.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper site selection and thinning to improve airflow.
- Prioritizing the identification and conservation of naturally resistant tree specimens.
