It is important to clarify that Ophioparma is not a plant disease but a genus of lichens. In agricultural practice, they are often mistaken for pathogens due to their crustose growth on the bark of perennial trees, but they do not cause necrosis or tissue damage to the plant itself.

The organism is a symbiotic association between a fungus and algae. It functions as an epiphyte, meaning it uses the tree solely as a physical substrate for anchoring. It does not penetrate the vascular system of the tree to absorb sap, thus it poses no direct threat to plant physiology.

These lichens thrive in orchards with high humidity, stagnant air, and poor light penetration. Fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and plums are common substrates, especially in mature or neglected orchards where bark surfaces remain damp for extended periods.

While not a parasite, heavy colonization of Ophioparma can contribute to indirect issues:

  • Providing shelter for overwintering insect pests like scale insects.
  • Trapping excessive moisture that may promote fungal rot.
  • Physically hindering the bark's ability to undergo gas exchange.

Preventive management focuses on improving the orchard ecosystem rather than chemical treatment. Proper pruning to ensure sunlight exposure and airflow is the most effective way to inhibit lichen growth. Mechanical removal during dormant season cleaning is standard practice to maintain bark health and discourage pest habitation.
