Ophiosphaerella root rot is a severe fungal disease caused by the pathogen Ophiosphaerella herpotricha. This fungus predominantly attacks the root system and the lower nodes of cereal stems, leading to severe vascular obstruction and nutrient deficiency in the plant.
The primary host range for this pathogen includes wheat and barley. While it is particularly damaging to winter wheat crops, various grassy weeds can also act as reservoirs for the fungus, allowing it to persist in the field even in the absence of a major cereal crop.
Symptoms are typically observed as necrosis of the crown and lower internodes. Infected plants show stunted growth and often exhibit patches of premature ripening or death. A diagnostic feature is the presence of dark-colored fungal mycelium, which is often visible on the roots upon close inspection.
The development of the disease is favored by moderate temperatures and adequate soil moisture levels. The fungus survives as perithecia in soil or within infected plant debris. The buildup of inoculum is directly related to the history of the field and the frequency of susceptible cereal crops in the rotation.
Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management. Key strategies include practicing long-term crop rotation with non-host species, such as legumes or oilseeds, ensuring proper sanitation to bury crop residues, and utilizing seed treatments containing systemic fungicides to provide early-season protection against infection.
