This fungus primarily infects trees within the Pinaceae family. It maintains a strong symbiotic relationship with various bark beetles and wood-boring insects. These insects act as vectors, transporting the fungus directly into the vascular tissue of the tree while creating entry points through their galleries and tunneling activities.
The visual signs of infestation are identified by the presence of internal staining deep within the wood, which often goes unnoticed until the tree is harvested or processed.
