Description

Dutch elm disease (DED) is a lethal fungal disease caused by the pathogen Ophiostoma novo-ulmi. It targets the vascular system of elm trees, triggering a defensive reaction in the tree that clogs its xylem vessels. This process, known as tylosis, effectively cuts off the tree's water supply, leading to rapid wilting and eventual death.

The disease affects various elm species, including native and introduced varieties. Ophiostoma novo-ulmi is known for being highly aggressive, significantly more so than its predecessor Ophiostoma ulmi, making it one of the most destructive tree diseases in North America and Europe.

The first external symptoms often appear in early summer, where leaves on specific branches begin to wilt, curl, and turn yellow or brown. A definitive diagnostic feature is observed under the bark: reddish-brown or black streaks appear in the current year's sapwood. These discolored rings are the primary indicators of the fungus obstructing the tree’s internal transport system.

The transmission is primarily facilitated by elm bark beetles (Scolytus species). Adult beetles carry fungal spores from diseased wood to healthy trees, introducing the pathogen during feeding. Furthermore, the disease spreads underground through root grafts, where the fungus travels directly from the root system of an infected tree to the roots of a neighboring healthy specimen.

Managing the disease requires a multi-faceted approach centered on sanitation and preventive care. Key strategies include identifying and removing infected trees promptly to eliminate breeding grounds for beetles. Additionally, homeowners and forest managers can utilize systemic fungicide injections, implement insecticide programs to control beetle vectors, and carefully manage root connectivity in urban landscapes to slow the spread of the pathogen.
