Description

Oak vascular mycosis is a serious fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Ophiostoma piceae. This pathogen specifically targets the conductive tissues of the tree, effectively disrupting the flow of water and nutrients from the roots to the crown, which eventually leads to tree decline.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various oak species, with the common oak being particularly susceptible. The fungus typically enters the host through wounds in the bark or through the galleries created by bark beetles, which serve as primary vectors for the fungal spores.

Symptoms of the infection include sudden wilting of the foliage, yellowing, and premature leaf drop during the growing season. A diagnostic feature is found upon cross-sectioning affected branches or trunks: distinct brown or black discoloration in the sapwood, representing clogged vessels.

Environmental stressors such as prolonged drought, soil compaction, or excessive moisture create favorable conditions for the disease to proliferate. Once the tree's natural defense mechanisms are weakened, the fungus colonizes the inner bark and sapwood, rapidly spreading throughout the vascular system.

The economic and ecological impact of this disease is significant, often resulting in widespread canopy thinning and the loss of mature forest stands. The mortality rate can be high if the infection is not managed promptly, leading to substantial timber losses.
