Ophiostoma piliferum
Description
Pathogen and disease type. The fungus Ophiostoma piliferum is an ascomycete species responsible for the condition commonly known as «blue stain» or «sapstain». Unlike decay fungi that decompose cellulose and lignin, this pathogen primarily affects the aesthetic value of the wood. It lives within the sapwood, feeding on stored nutrients rather than the wood cell wall structure itself.
Host plants. The fungus targets coniferous species, primarily pines, spruces, and firs. It is most prevalent in logs, lumber, and timber products that have been harvested but not yet dried or chemically treated. Softwoods are particularly susceptible due to their nutrient-rich sapwood, which provides ideal growth conditions for the fungal mycelium.
Symptoms and signs. The characteristic sign of infestation is a grayish-blue to dark black discoloration of the wood tissue. This color often appears as wedges or patches extending from the surface deep into the wood. The stain is typically permanent and cannot be removed by planing or light sanding, as it permeates the cells deeply.
Conditions for development and economic impact. The fungus thrives in warm, humid conditions where the moisture content of the wood is above 20%. Spores are primarily spread by bark beetles or wind. While the structural integrity of the timber remains largely intact, the economic impact is high: blue-stained wood is downgraded for commercial use, often excluded from high-value furniture or visible construction applications, leading to significant financial losses for the timber industry.
Control and prevention measures. Preventing blue stain requires proactive management of harvested timber:
- Immediate processing or debarking of harvested logs to reduce moisture and insect access.
- Rapid kiln drying of lumber to reach a moisture content below 20% as quickly as possible.
- Application of chemical fungicides to freshly sawn timber to inhibit initial spore germination.
- Proper stacking techniques ensuring good airflow and reduced relative humidity around wood piles.
- Integrated pest management to reduce bark beetle populations that introduce the fungus into logs.
