Description
Ophiostoma pluriannulatum is an ascomycete fungus known for causing blue stain, a significant defect in the sapwood of various hardwood and softwood species. Unlike wood-rotting fungi that break down cellulose and lignin, these fungi colonize the parenchyma cells of the wood, utilizing stored carbohydrates, which leads to characteristic discoloration without immediate structural degradation.
The disease primarily affects timber logs, sawlogs, and weakened standing trees. Hardwoods such as oak, beech, and ash are highly susceptible, especially when logs are left in the forest environment for extended periods. This fungus reduces the economic value of timber, as the blue-grey staining is often considered unacceptable for aesthetic applications or high-quality furniture production.
The visual symptoms appear as dark blue, grey, or black streaks within the sapwood. In some cases, the discoloration can penetrate deeply into the heartwood depending on the moisture level and the specific tree species. The presence of the fungus also increases the permeability of the wood, which may subsequently attract secondary wood-boring insects or other decay fungi.
The propagation of the fungus is strictly tied to environmental conditions. It thrives in temperate conditions with high humidity and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. The primary vector for the transmission of spores is bark beetles (Scolytinae), which introduce the fungus into the tree during their boring process, creating an ideal microclimate for the pathogen to thrive.
