Ophiostoma quercus is a fungal pathogen responsible for vascular diseases in oak trees. As a member of the Ophiostomatales order, this fungus invades the xylem tissues of its host, disrupting the plant's ability to conduct water. This physiological interference leads to the rapid wilting of foliage and progressive dieback of the tree structure, often resulting in mortality.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are trees within the Quercus genus. The fungus is frequently disseminated by bark beetles, which act as vectors, transporting spores from infected trees to healthy ones. This interaction makes the disease highly contagious in forest ecosystems where beetle populations are active or where trees have been mechanically compromised by environmental factors.

Common clinical signs of the disease include the premature browning and drooping of leaves, which often remain attached to the branches even after the tree has died. Internally, infection is characterized by dark vascular staining or streaks visible on the sapwood when the bark is peeled back or a branch is cross-cut.
