While it is primarily saprotrophic, its presence on living trees often acts as a biological indicator of weakened defense systems. Agronomists monitor this species to identify wood areas that have already begun the decomposition process, which may indicate a need for remedial action.

The disease type involves soft rot and wood degradation. The fungus penetrates the cell walls of the xylem, breaking down complex polymers. By degrading the lignin and cellulose, the fungus renders the tissue brittle. While it typically does not kill healthy trees, its colonizing activity is a major sign that the tree is suffering from environmental or secondary biotic stress.
