Description
Ossicaulis is a genus of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the Lyophyllaceae family. In agronomy and arboriculture, it is classified as a wood-decaying fungus responsible for causing white rot. While primarily acting as a saprotroph, it can opportunistically invade weakened woody plants, leading to structural deterioration of the tree tissues.
The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium, which penetrates the woody tissue through bark wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks. Once established, the fungus secretes enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose. This enzymatic action effectively degrades the structural integrity of the xylem, converting hard wood into a soft, fibrous, and discolored mass.
This pathogen primarily targets deciduous tree species, such as elms, poplars, and willows, although it can occasionally impact orchard trees. The susceptibility of a host plant significantly increases if the tree is already stressed by environmental factors, pests, or mechanical injury, providing the necessary entry points for fungal spores to germinate and colonize.
The most visible symptoms include the appearance of dense clusters of mushroom-like fruiting bodies on the surface of the trunk or large limbs. Internally, the affected wood exhibits a bleached, white appearance and becomes structurally unstable. As the decay progresses deep into the heartwood, the tree's mechanical strength declines significantly, resulting in a high risk of branch failure.
