Ostropa (lat. Ostropa) is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division. Within agricultural and forestry contexts, this object is recognized as a pathogen causing specific fungal diseases of the bark and wood of deciduous trees. These fungi typically exhibit saprotrophic or weakly parasitic characteristics, colonizing weakened plant tissues.

The primary crops susceptible to this fungus include various species of deciduous trees, such as alder and willow, as well as several types of shrubs. The fungus is most frequently identified on dying branches or tree trunks, where humidity levels are favorable for intense mycelial growth and the subsequent development of fruiting bodies.

Symptoms of the infection manifest through the appearance of characteristic small, often immersed or semi-immersed fruiting bodies known as apothecia on the bark surface. These structures typically have a rounded or elongated shape and are usually dark in color. As the infection progresses, the bark tissue changes color, becomes brittle, and gradually detaches from the wood, indicating deep penetration of the fungal hyphae.

The development of the disease is closely linked to high air humidity and the presence of bark lesions, which can result from mechanical damage or exposure to adverse environmental conditions. The fungus spreads actively via spores, which are disseminated by wind or rain splash, colonizing new weakened trees within the stand.

The harmfulness of Ostropa lies in the acceleration of wood decomposition processes, which can lead to premature drying of individual branches or an overall decline in plant health. To ensure effective protection, it is essential to conduct sanitary pruning of affected parts, manage stand density properly, and maintain the vigor of the trees to prevent secondary infections.
