Description

Ostropales is a diverse order of fungi belonging to the class Lecanoromycetes. While many species are known for their lichenized forms, some members of this order are significant in phytopathology as pathogens that affect the bark and woody tissues of plants, often leading to localized necrotic lesions.

The disease is caused by fungi that penetrate the plant through wounds, cracks in the bark, or lenticels. Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the cambium layer, interfering with the transport of nutrients and water, which eventually weakens the overall physiological health of the tree or shrub.

Host plants commonly include various deciduous trees and woody ornamental species. These fungi are opportunistic, primarily targeting plants already weakened by environmental stress, mechanical damage, or poor site conditions, making them a common concern in both forestry and landscape management.

Symptoms of Ostropales infection include depressed areas on the bark, cracking, and the development of small, dark fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the surface of the lesions. As the infection progresses, it can cause branch dieback, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the affected plant tissue.
