Otidea leporina, commonly known as the hare's ear, is a species of fungus in the Otideaceae family. It is vital for agronomists and forest managers to distinguish it from true plant pathogens, as it functions primarily as a saprotroph. This means it derives nutrients from decaying organic matter rather than attacking living plant tissues or crops.

The fungus is characterized by its distinct ear-shaped apothecia, which appear in clusters during the late summer and autumn. These fruiting bodies are typically yellowish-brown to reddish-brown. The pathogen, if one could label it as such in an ecological sense, is a decomposer that thrives in environments rich in coniferous debris, where it assists in the breakdown of lignin and cellulose.

There are no known crops affected by Otidea leporina in a pathogenic way. It does not cause root rot, vascular wilt, or any necrosis on healthy plant foliage. Its presence is strictly linked to the surface layer of the soil and the thickness of the leaf or needle litter layer, making it an indicator of organic matter accumulation rather than a threat to agricultural productivity.

The development of this fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and mild temperatures. It reproduces via microscopic spores dispersed by wind or water splashes. In forest nurseries, if the presence of such fungi is undesirable for aesthetic or management reasons, the primary growth factor—excessive organic buildup—can be managed to discourage colonization.

Management and prevention measures are generally unnecessary for this species since it does not pose a risk to plant health. However, for those maintaining nurseries, general hygiene practices are sufficient:

  • maintaining proper spacing for air circulation;
  • removing excessive leaf litter to reduce moisture traps;
  • improving drainage to prevent localized water accumulation in the soil surface.
