Oxyporus is a genus of fungi within the Schizoporaceae family, known for acting as serious pathogens that cause white rot in various hardwood tree species. These fungi are wood-decaying organisms that infiltrate the tree's internal structure, primarily targeting the heartwood, which significantly compromises the structural integrity of the plant.
The disease is characterized by a gradual decomposition of lignin and cellulose within the host plant. The infection typically begins when fungal spores enter through wounds, such as broken branches, pruning cuts, or frost cracks on the bark. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the tree, leading to internal decay that is often hidden until the late stages of infection.
Host species include a wide variety of deciduous trees, most notably poplars, maples, beeches, and lindens. The fungus thrives in environments with high humidity and is frequently found in mature or neglected stands. Because it is a long-term parasite, it can persist in a single tree for many years, weakening it and eventually leading to windthrow or trunk breakage.
Visible symptoms include the development of perennial fruiting bodies on the trunk. These brackets are often tough, woody, and pale to brownish in color, usually arranged in overlapping clusters. The internal wood exhibits typical signs of white rot: it becomes soft, light-colored, and stringy, often losing its characteristic density and strength.
Management and prevention focus on maintaining tree vigor and minimizing fungal entry:
- Regular forest health inspections to identify and remove heavily infected, hazardous trees.
- Proper pruning techniques to ensure clean cuts that heal quickly, preventing spore entry.
- Protecting tree trunks from mechanical damage caused by lawn mowers or heavy machinery.
- Applying wound dressings to major cuts on valuable ornamental trees to seal off susceptible tissue.
