Description

Pachnocybaceae infection is an atypical fungal disease affecting various woody plants, caused by fungi belonging to the Pachnocybaceae family. These fungi, classified as Ascomycetes, typically produce distinctive capitate or stalked fruiting bodies on the substrates they colonize. While primarily identified as saprotrophs living on dead plant material, certain species within this family are known to opportunisticlly colonize weakened living tissue.

The primary hosts for this group of fungi are deciduous trees and shrubs, particularly those under environmental stress or mechanical damage. The pathogen commonly colonizes the bark, deadwood, and necrotic tissues of branches. By utilizing existing lesions, the fungus can penetrate deeper into the vascular system of the host, potentially leading to gradual degradation of the bark and supporting tissue of the plant.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the emergence of tiny, dark-colored stalked structures that look like minute bristles or clubs on the surface of the bark. These formations are often accompanied by localized discoloration, softening of the cortex, and the development of superficial cracks. In advanced stages of colonization, the affected area may show signs of premature shedding of the bark and localized necrosis.

Development and spread of the infection are heavily dependent on climatic factors. High relative humidity and temperatures in the range of 18–22°C provide the ideal environment for the dispersal of conidia. The spores are primarily disseminated via wind currents, rainfall, and occasionally through mechanical transmission by pests or pruning equipment, which facilitates the rapid spread across orchard or nursery stands.

To effectively manage and prevent the spread of this pathogen, agricultural and arboricultural standards must be strictly followed:

  • Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected wood.
  • Sterilization of pruning tools using alcohol or bleach solutions to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Application of antifungal wound dressings to all major cuts and mechanical injuries.
  • Improving site aeration to reduce micro-humidity levels near the bark surface of trees.
