The causative agent consists of soil-dwelling fungi that form specialized structures within root tissues. They function as endosymbionts under normal conditions, but in stress-heavy environments or unbalanced soil microbiomes, they may act as facultative pathogens. The biological mechanism involves colonization of the root cortex, which can eventually hinder nutrient transport pathways.
