Description

The Pacisporiaceae family belongs to the order Gigasporales within the phylum Glomeromycota. These organisms are not plant pathogens; rather, they are highly beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that establish symbiotic relationships with the roots of the vast majority of vascular plants, playing a vital role in natural ecosystem productivity.

Biological function: unlike disease-causing agents, Pacisporiaceae form intricate structures called arbuscules within root cortical cells. These structures facilitate the efficient exchange of nutrients, specifically phosphorus and micronutrients, from the soil to the plant in return for plant-derived carbon. This symbiosis improves the plant's overall nutritional status and resilience.

Host crops: these fungi associate with a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, legumes, and various horticultural species. By extending the root surface area via their extensive extraradical hyphal network, they allow the host plant to access water and nutrients in soil zones that roots alone cannot reach, effectively boosting growth in nutrient-poor substrates.

Symptoms and signs: as beneficial symbionts, they do not cause any damage or necrotic lesions on the plant. Instead, a healthy colonization is evidenced by improved growth, vigorous root development, and enhanced green color of the foliage. Microscopic examination of cleared and stained roots is the only way to confirm the presence and health of the fungal colonization.

Management and preservation: to maintain beneficial Pacisporiaceae populations, farmers should focus on soil conservation practices. High levels of synthetic fertilizers, particularly phosphorus, can inhibit AMF colonization. Furthermore, excessive tillage and the use of broad-spectrum soil fungicides should be limited, as these practices disrupt the fragile hyphal networks necessary for crop health.
