Paecilomyces farinosus (currently often classified as Isaria farinosa) is a prominent entomopathogenic fungus. In agricultural practice, it is not categorized as a plant pathogen, but rather as a beneficial organism used in integrated pest management (IPM) to control various insect populations that threaten crop health and yield.
The fungus acts as a pathogen for insects, causing a type of disease known as muscardine. It infects its host by contact; fungal spores (conidia) adhere to the insect's cuticle, germinate, and penetrate the body cavity. Once inside, the fungus consumes the host's tissues and eventually causes death, while the host remains a substrate for further fungal growth.
The host range of P. farinosus is broad, including many serious agricultural pests such as caterpillars of Lepidoptera, various species of aphids, whiteflies, and beetles. Its ability to decimate large populations of pests makes it a subject of extensive research for the development of effective, eco-friendly biopesticides as alternatives to synthetic chemical insecticides.
