Pallidocercospora heimii is a fungal pathogen notorious for causing severe leaf spot disease in various Eucalyptus species. Previously categorized under the genus Cercospora, this fungus is a significant threat in tropical and subtropical forestry, impacting both plantation yields and the health of ornamental eucalypts.
The host range is primarily restricted to the genus Eucalyptus. The pathogen demonstrates varying levels of virulence depending on the host genotype and environmental context. While mature trees may survive chronic infections, young seedlings in nurseries are particularly susceptible and can experience high mortality rates if the disease is not managed effectively.
The symptoms of the infection typically manifest as necrotic lesions on the leaves. These spots start as small, chlorotic or pale lesions that expand and turn brown or grayish as the tissue dies. Under humid conditions, the pathogen produces conidia, visible as dark spots or fungal growth on the underside of the leaf, which facilitate the rapid spread of the disease within the canopy.
