Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Pallidocercospora konae. Formerly classified under the Cercospora genus, this pathogen has been reclassified based on molecular data, specifically targeting coffee foliage and causing significant pathological stress to the host plant.
The primary host for this fungus is the coffee plant, particularly Coffea arabica. It is a geographically significant disease in coffee-growing regions, often thriving in high-altitude or humid tropical environments where coffee is cultivated on a commercial scale.
Symptoms appear as small, chlorotic lesions on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots turn reddish-brown or dark brown, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In high-humidity conditions, the center of the spot may develop a greyish mold, which consists of the fungus's conidia and conidiophores ready for dispersal.
Development and spread are facilitated by rainfall, wind, and splashing water, which distribute spores onto healthy leaf tissue. High humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for spore germination and colonization. Poorly managed plantations with dense canopies that prevent rapid drying of foliage are particularly susceptible to severe outbreaks.
The economic damage caused by Pallidocercospora konae is associated with premature leaf senescence and abscission. This reduction in the functional leaf area inhibits the plant's ability to produce energy, resulting in reduced fruit yield, lower bean quality, and a general decline in the overall vigor and lifespan of the coffee tree.
