Panaeolina is a genus of mushrooms that acts as a soil saprotroph, often identified by its presence in lawns and agricultural pastures. In agronomy, it is recognized for its role in forming biological structures known as fairy rings, which impact the health and aesthetic quality of turfgrass by disrupting soil chemistry and water retention.

The primary pathogen involved is Panaeolina foenisecii. This fungus feeds on decaying organic matter within the soil profile. While it does not directly feed on living plant tissues, its extensive mycelial network creates a hydrophobic layer in the soil, which effectively starves the roots of turf plants of essential nutrients and hydration.

Symptoms of infestation are highly visible during wet seasons. The affected area often displays dark green rings of grass surrounding a zone of wilting or dead vegetation where the mushroom caps frequently emerge.
