Panaeolina foenisecii, widely known as the lawn mower's mushroom, is a common saprotrophic fungus that frequently colonizes turfgrass ecosystems. Although it does not cause plant diseases in the sense of infecting living tissues, it is often categorized as a nuisance agent that degrades the visual quality and uniformity of lawns, golf courses, and landscaping.
The primary hosts affected are various species of turfgrass. The fungus thrives in the thatch layer—the organic layer consisting of living and dead roots and stems. By decomposing this organic matter, the fungus impacts the moisture retention capacity and nutrient profile of the soil environment.
Symptoms typically manifest as the sudden appearance of small, brownish mushrooms following rainfall or irrigation. Beyond the aesthetic issue of the mushrooms themselves, the lawn may show localized thinning or discoloration if the underlying thatch layer becomes excessively thick and retains too much moisture.
Development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, moderate temperatures, and poor drainage. The spores of Panaeolina foenisecii are easily wind-dispersed, and the fungus rapidly colonizes areas where the thatch layer has been allowed to accumulate beyond recommended levels.
Management strategies for this fungus focus on cultural practices rather than chemical fungicides. To prevent its proliferation, it is essential to perform regular dethatching or scarification to reduce organic accumulation. Additionally, proper soil aeration, balanced irrigation scheduling to avoid surface saturation, and maintaining adequate light exposure will effectively inhibit fungal growth.
