Pandora neoaphidis is a specialized entomopathogenic fungus belonging to the order Entomophthorales. It is widely recognized in agronomy as a critical natural regulator of aphid populations. Unlike pathogens that attack crops, this fungus exclusively targets aphids, making it a highly beneficial organism for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in agricultural and horticultural environments.

The host range of Pandora neoaphidis is broad, covering many economically important aphid species. It commonly infects pea aphids, peach-potato aphids, and various cereal aphids. By triggering epizootics, the fungus can decimate entire colonies of these pests, significantly reducing the pressure on crops such as wheat, legumes, and various fruit trees without the need for synthetic chemical intervention.

Symptoms of the infection are distinct: infected aphids stop feeding shortly after contracting the pathogen. As the fungus consumes the host internally, the aphid becomes lethargic and often changes color to a pale yellowish or brownish shade. Eventually, the insect dies and becomes anchored to the leaf surface by fungal hyphae, where it acts as a reservoir for further dispersal of infective conidia.

The development and transmission of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High relative humidity (typically above 80%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C are ideal for the rapid germination of spores and successful infection of new hosts. During prolonged periods of cool, wet weather, the fungus spreads efficiently through aphid colonies via airborne conidia.

To leverage the benefits of this pathogen, farmers and agronomists should implement practices that preserve and promote its activity. Effective strategies include:

  • Reducing the application of broad-spectrum fungicides that may harm beneficial fungi.
  • Maintaining field margins and buffer zones to harbor natural reservoirs of the pathogen.
  • Using crop management practices that favor humidity retention within the canopy.
  • Monitoring pest populations for signs of natural fungal control before opting for chemical sprays.
