Description

The genus Panellus includes several species of fungi that play a crucial role in forest ecosystems as decomposers. While typically categorized as saprotrophs, under specific environmental conditions, these fungi can behave as pathogens, colonizing weakened woody plants and inducing white rot.

The pathogen spreads primarily via basidiospores that infect trees through wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks in the bark. Once inside, the fungal mycelium utilizes enzymes to break down lignin and cellulose, leading to a significant degradation of the tree's structural integrity.

The fungus is commonly found on various hardwood species, including oak, beech, and birch. In managed landscapes or orchards, it targets trees that are already stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous mechanical damage, further accelerating the decline of the host tree.

  • Appearance of small, fan-shaped or kidney-shaped fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches;
  • Bleached, stringy appearance of the internal wood fibers;
  • Development of heart rot, compromising the tree's stability;
  • Reduced vigor, yellowing leaves, and premature dieback of the canopy.

Development and spread of Panellus are heavily influenced by high humidity levels and temperature fluctuations. The fungus thrives in damp environments where moisture persists on woody surfaces, allowing the spores to germinate effectively and establish a new colony within the host tissue.

Effective control measures focus on preventive arboriculture. This includes maintaining optimal plant health, avoiding unnecessary bark wounds, and promptly removing diseased wood. Treating pruning wounds with protective coatings is essential to prevent spores from accessing the internal wood layers.
