Panellus stipticus is a saprotrophic fungus recognized primarily as an agent of white rot in woody plant species. While it functions as a beneficial decomposer in natural forest ecosystems, it acts as a secondary pathogen in managed landscapes, colonizing stressed, damaged, or decaying wood and compromising the structural integrity of trees.

This fungus typically attacks a wide range of hardwood tree species, such as oak, beech, and various fruit-bearing trees found in orchards. The infection usually begins at sites of bark injury, pruning wounds, or areas of dead wood, where the mycelium establishes itself and begins the enzymatic breakdown of the wood's structural components, specifically lignin and cellulose.

The presence of Panellus stipticus is marked by the emergence of fan-shaped, sessile, or lateral-stemmed fruit bodies that are often pale yellow or tan. Internally, the disease is identified by a characteristic bleaching of the wood, which becomes soft, spongy, and brittle as the fungal hyphae degrade the wood fibers, eventually leading to internal cavitation.

Environmental conditions favoring the development of this fungus include high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and consistent moisture on exposed wood surfaces. Spores are primarily disseminated through air currents and water splashes, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across an orchard or woodland site during moist, temperate weather periods.

Effective management and prevention focus on maintaining tree vigor and minimizing exposure of heartwood. Recommendations include the proper sealing of pruning cuts, prompt removal of dead or decaying wood, and avoiding mechanical damage to the bark. By reducing the accumulation of dead organic matter, arborists can significantly lower the risk of fungal colonization.
