Panus is a genus of fungi within the class Basidiomycota, recognized as significant pathogens responsible for white rot in wood. From an agronomic and forestry perspective, these fungi act as aggressive decomposers that thrive on the lignin and cellulose within the woody tissues of weakened trees, leading to severe structural degradation.
This disease primarily affects a variety of deciduous tree species, including oak, beech, and birch, as well as various fruit trees in orchard settings. Trees that have suffered from mechanical injuries, frost cracks, or improper pruning are particularly susceptible, as these wounds provide ideal entry points for the fungal spores to establish colonies.
The visible symptoms of a Panus infection are the emergence of distinct, fan-shaped or funnel-shaped fruiting bodies protruding from the bark of the host tree. These fruiting bodies are often tough, leathery, and sometimes pubescent. Internally, the wood loses its tensile strength, becomes discolored, and develops a characteristic soft, fibrous texture, which eventually compromises the entire mechanical integrity of the tree.
The environmental factors that promote the development and spread of Panus include high humidity, moderate temperatures, and the presence of exposed woody tissue. The spores are typically dispersed by wind, rain, or through contaminated gardening tools used across multiple trees, allowing the fungus to propagate rapidly in dense or poorly maintained forest and orchard environments.
The economic impact of this pathogen is measured in the decline of wood quality and the potential death of trees due to structural failure. Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal of dead or dying limbs.
- Applying wound dressings or fungicidal pastes to all pruning cuts to seal the wood.
- Ensuring proper air circulation and sunlight exposure through systematic crown thinning.
- Removing debris and decaying wood from the vicinity of healthy trees.
- Disinfecting pruning tools between trees to prevent the cross-contamination of spores.
