Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Paracercosporidium microsorum, an ascomycete pathogen that specifically targets lime trees (genus Tilia). It functions as an obligate or facultative parasite, living off the nutrients of the host plant's leaf tissue.
This disease primarily affects the foliage of lime trees. It is characterized by the appearance of numerous small spots on the leaf blades, which may eventually coalesce, causing significant tissue necrosis and leading to premature leaf drop during the peak of the growing season.
Diagnostic signs include the emergence of pale, circular spots that transition into brown or greyish necrotic lesions. Upon closer inspection, particularly on the underside of the leaf, one can observe the greyish fungal growth, which represents the conidial stage of the pathogen, responsible for its secondary spread.
The development and spread of Paracercosporidium microsorum are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and prolonged moisture on leaf surfaces. These conditions facilitate the germination of spores and the subsequent infection of healthy plant tissues.
The detrimental impact of the disease is seen in reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly affects the tree's vigor and long-term health. Severe infections can lead to significant defoliation, leaving the tree stressed and more susceptible to drought, frost, and secondary pest attacks.
Prevention strategies center on cultural practices, most importantly the thorough removal and destruction of fallen infected leaves, which serve as the primary inoculum reservoir. Chemical control involving targeted fungicide applications during the early stages of the growing season can also be effective in managing severe outbreaks.
