Paraconiothyrium blight is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Paraconiothyrium fuckelii. It acts primarily as a necrotrophic pathogen, colonizing the plant tissues and leading to necrosis in shoots, branches, and stems, which often causes dieback symptoms in various ornamental and woody plant species.

The host range is diverse, with significant impact on conifer species like junipers and thujas, as well as various deciduous shrubs like roses. The fungus usually enters the plant through wounds, such as mechanical injuries, frost cracks, or sites where insects have fed, making healthy plants that have been damaged particularly susceptible to invasion.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as discoloration of the bark, which turns brown or greyish as tissue death progresses. One of the most definitive diagnostic features is the development of small, dark, pimple-like fruiting bodies known as pycnidia on the surface of the infected bark. These structures release spores that spread the infection throughout the garden.

The development and spread of Paraconiothyrium fuckelii are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity, persistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide optimal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Poor air circulation in dense plantings exacerbates the issue by keeping plant surfaces wet for extended periods.

Effective management requires an integrated strategy focused on sanitation and prevention. This includes the removal and destruction of infected plant material, proper pruning techniques, and sterilization of tools to prevent cross-contamination. Preventive fungicide applications, particularly those containing copper or systemic active ingredients, should be applied during the early stages of the growing season to minimize the risk of new infections.
