Paraconiothyrium maculicutis is a fungal pathogen responsible for specific necrotic diseases in woody plants. Classified as an ascomycete, this fungus primarily invades the cortical tissues of trees and shrubs, disrupting the transport of nutrients and water by infecting the bark and cambium layers.

The host range of this pathogen includes various fruit trees and ornamental species. It frequently targets plants that are already stressed by environmental factors, such as winter frost damage, drought, or poor soil conditions, which create physical entry points for the fungal spores.

The primary clinical signs of the disease include the formation of discolored spots on the shoots and branches. As the pathogen colonizes the tissue, the bark begins to show signs of necrosis, cracking, and eventual drying. Under close inspection, the fruiting bodies of the fungus appear as small, dark spots embedded in the dead tissue.
