Paraconiothyrium canker, caused by the fungus Paraconiothyrium tiliae, is a parasitic disease affecting the bark and cambium of linden trees (Tilia spp.). As an aggressive fungal pathogen, it targets the plant's structural tissues, leading to localized necrosis and long-term damage to the tree's vascular system. It is recognized as a serious pathogen in both forest stands and urban landscaping.

The primary host for this fungus is the linden tree. The disease is particularly prevalent in trees already suffering from environmental stress, such as drought, soil compaction, or poor site conditions. The fungus utilizes small fissures in the bark as entry points, making trees with prior damage or those exposed to severe weather conditions more susceptible to infection.

Symptoms of Paraconiothyrium tiliae include the development of sunken lesions on the bark, which may eventually crack and expose the underlying wood. In advanced stages, these cankers can encircle the branch, cutting off the flow of nutrients and moisture, which leads to sudden flagging of foliage and dieback of the branch distal to the infection site.

Development and spread are primarily facilitated by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are ideal for spore dispersal via wind and rain splash. Insects can also act as vectors, carrying fungal spores from tree to tree while creating new wounds in the bark during feeding. Managing the environment is crucial for controlling the disease cycle.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain tree vigor and sanitation. Key strategies for controlling the infection include:

  • Immediate pruning and disposal of infected limbs to reduce the fungal inoculum.
  • Sterilizing pruning tools with alcohol or bleach solutions between cuts.
  • Applying preventive copper-based fungicide sprays during the dormant season.
  • Enhancing overall tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation to improve the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
