The causative agent of the disease is the micromycete Paradendryphiella arenariae, a fungal pathogen that primarily affects succulent plants and various halophytes. This pathogen belongs to the mitosporic fungi group and relies on conidial dispersal to spread within plant collections. The fungus is highly adapted to colonizing host tissues, utilizing moisture to germinate and penetrate the epidermis of the plant.
This disease mainly impacts species within the Crassulaceae and Aizoaceae families, often causing significant aesthetic and structural damage. In greenhouse settings, the fungus can become endemic if environmental conditions are not strictly managed. While it is primarily a leaf-spotting pathogen, in advanced stages of infection, it can affect stems and compromise the structural integrity of the entire plant.
Symptoms typically begin as small, pale lesions that gradually expand and darken into brown or necrotic spots. A hallmark of Paradendryphiella arenariae infection is the dark border surrounding the necrotic area, which is often visible to the naked eye. Under conditions of high humidity, an olive-green fungal mat—the conidiophores and conidia—appears on the surface of the lesions, indicating active spore production.
Development and spread of the pathogen are accelerated by high relative humidity (above 70%), moderate temperatures between +18°C and +26°C, and poor air circulation. The pathogen is easily disseminated by splashing water during irrigation, contaminated tools, and infected debris left in the growing area. These conditions facilitate rapid secondary infection cycles, potentially covering an entire collection within weeks.
The harm caused by this pathogen is significant; it inhibits photosynthesis, reduces plant vigor, and creates entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal rot. Without intervention, affected plants lose their commercial value and may eventually succumb to severe dehydration and necrosis of the vascular system. Maintaining plant health requires a proactive approach to prevent total crop loss.
Integrated pest management strategies for this disease include:
- Strict sanitation protocols including the removal of all infected plant tissues.
- Improving air circulation and ventilation to keep foliage dry.
- Applying fungicides containing copper, mancozeb, or systemic triazoles as a preventative measure.
