Description
It is a common misconception to classify Paraglomus as a plant disease. In reality, this is a genus of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that plays a critical role in agricultural ecosystems by forming symbiotic relationships with plant roots. These fungi are not pathogens and do not cause necrotic damage or systemic diseases in crops.
The biological nature of Paraglomus is strictly symbiotic. The fungus colonizes the root cortex and forms specialized structures called arbuscules. Through these microscopic interfaces, the fungus transfers essential mineral nutrients, primarily phosphorus, from the soil to the plant, receiving carbon-based photosynthates in exchange.
A wide variety of crops form associations with these fungi, including cereals, legumes, and horticultural plants. By extending their mycelial network far beyond the root zone, these fungi significantly increase the root surface area. This association is particularly beneficial for plants grown in nutrient-poor or drought-prone soils, helping them maintain growth under stress.
The conditions for the development of these fungi include healthy, non-compacted soil with moderate moisture and the presence of host plants. Excessive use of phosphorus fertilizers or high-frequency soil disturbance can suppress the development of Paraglomus and other mycorrhizal species, as the plant becomes less dependent on the symbiont for nutrient absorption.
Regarding management, there is no need to protect plants from Paraglomus because it is not harmful. Instead, modern agronomic practices emphasize the preservation of this fungal population to enhance soil fertility naturally. Preventive measures for crop health should focus on reducing fungicide applications and soil disturbance to ensure that beneficial mycorrhizal networks can survive and support crop productivity.
