Paraleptosphaeria macrospora is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing leaf spot diseases in various cereal crops. It belongs to the group of Ascomycota fungi and is recognized as a significant constraint to agricultural productivity, particularly in cereal-growing regions where environmental conditions favor the development of necrotrophic pathogens.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include wheat and barley. The fungus is capable of infecting both spring and winter varieties. It survives between seasons as mycelium or as pycnidia on crop debris left in the field, which serves as the primary reservoir for infection in the subsequent growing season.

Symptoms initially appear as small, chlorotic or light green spots on the lower leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand and develop necrotic centers that are typically brown or tan in color. Small, dark, pimple-like structures, known as pycnidia, eventually become visible within these spots, representing the reproductive stage of the fungus.
