Paraleptosphaeria nitschkei is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the class Ascomycetes, responsible for necrotic lesions on various woody plants and shrubs. This pathogen is a specialized micromycete frequently associated with decaying bark tissues, making it a critical subject for phytopathological monitoring in both forestry and commercial horticulture.

The fungus primarily targets deciduous tree species, including members of the willow genus (Salix) and various shrubs. While the pathogen often thrives as a saprotroph on weakened shoots, it can transition to a parasitic life cycle under favorable conditions, actively colonizing healthy plant tissues and disrupting essential physiological functions.

Symptoms of infection are characterized by the development of distinct dark fruiting bodies (pseudothecia) on the surface of the affected bark. At the infection site, localized necrosis occurs, which can lead to bark splitting, the dieback of individual branches, and overall stunted plant growth. The infection severely restricts sap flow, which weakens the plant's natural defense mechanisms.

Disease development is closely linked to high humidity levels and the presence of primary mechanical injuries on the bark. The fungus spreads rapidly in dense plantings where air circulation is restricted. Spores are disseminated by wind and rain splashes, facilitating the infection of neighboring plants, particularly during periods of early spring thaws or prolonged autumn rainfall.

To prevent the spread of this disease, adherence to strict agrotechnical control measures is required. These key practices include:

  • Performing regular sanitary pruning of infected branches.
  • Disinfecting pruning tools after contact with diseased specimens.
  • Proper removal and disposal of plant debris where the infection persists.
  • Maintaining optimal plant density to reduce humidity around the root and stem zones.

Chemical control methods involve the use of broad-spectrum fungicides based on copper or systemic agents from the triazole group during active growth stages. Preventive treatments should be applied in early spring before sap flow begins to minimize the risk of primary infection on new shoots.
