Paraleptosphaeria orobanches

Paraleptosphaeria orobanches is a specific microscopic fungus classified as a mycopathogen that affects various species of broomrape (Orobanche spp.), which is a dangerous parasitic plant for many agricultural crops. Unlike most plant diseases, this pathogen acts as a natural biological agent that can suppress the development of the parasitic plant, providing potential benefits to agroecosystems.

The pathogen belongs to the Ascomycota division. It specializes in infecting broomrape tissues at various stages of development, from seedlings to mature flowering stems. The type of disease caused by this fungus is characterized by necrotic spotting and tissue rot, leading to the premature death of the broomrape before it can produce seeds.

The main crops where the activity of this fungus is indirectly observed include sunflowers, tomatoes, tobacco, and other plants suffering from broomrape infestations. Since the fungus affects exclusively the parasite, it poses no threat to cultivated plants; instead, it is viewed as a tool for biological weed control, reducing the total population of the parasite in the field.

The development and spread of the pathogen are directly dependent on moisture levels and temperatures of the soil and air. High humidity and moderately warm conditions promote active sporulation of the fungus and rapid infection of broomrape tissues. During dry periods, the activity of the fungus decreases significantly, allowing the parasite to recover its presence in crops.

The impact on the parasitic weed involves the destruction of its vascular system, preventing the uptake of nutrients from the host plant's roots. As a preventive and control measure to limit the spread of broomrape, agronomists recommend creating conditions favorable for the natural enemies of this weed, alongside implementing crop rotations and planting resistant crop hybrids.
