Paraleptosphaeria praetermissa is a fungal pathogen belonging to the order Pleosporales. It is primarily recognized as a causal agent of necrotic spot diseases on various graminaceous plants. Taxonomically, it is distinguished by specific morphological traits of its ascomata and conidia, which differentiate it from other related species within the Dothideomycetes class.

This fungus typically attacks cereal crops, including wheat and barley. It acts as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing living plant tissue before transitioning to a saprotrophic phase on decaying organic matter. This biological cycle allows the pathogen to survive harsh winters in crop residues, creating a permanent reservoir for future infections.

The disease manifests as distinct lesions on leaves and stems, which often expand and coalesce, leading to premature chlorosis and necrosis. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, dark pycnidia on the surface of the lesions. Under humid conditions, these pycnidia release masses of conidia that serve as the primary inoculum for secondary spread.

The infection cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly leaf wetness duration and high relative humidity. Rain splashes are the main mechanism for the short-range dispersal of spores, while wind currents can facilitate long-range movement of ascospores. Rapid development occurs during cool, wet growing seasons, often resulting in severe damage if untreated.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes the removal of inoculum sources through deep plowing, the use of resistant or tolerant cultivars, and the timely application of systemic fungicides. Monitoring fields during the tillering and stem elongation stages is essential for determining the appropriate timing for chemical interventions.
