Paraphoma leaf spot is a plant pathology caused by the fungus Paraphoma fimeti. This microorganism is an opportunistic pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of host plants, leading to necrotic spots and physiological degradation of plant tissues.

The fungus primarily impacts vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and potatoes, but it can also be found on various ornamental plants and field crops. It is particularly problematic in intensive cultivation systems where humidity levels are difficult to control.

Symptoms of the infection involve the appearance of dark, circular or irregular lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. As the pathogen matures, it produces characteristic pycnidia, which appear as tiny black specks within the infected areas. If left unchecked, these lesions can coalesce, resulting in complete leaf death and stem girdling.

The disease development is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. The fungus survives the winter on crop debris and in the soil, allowing it to re-emerge as a primary inoculum source during the following growing season.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical strategies. Recommended practices include:

  • Removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
  • Implementation of proper crop rotation to break the infection cycle.
  • Ensuring adequate spacing and airflow to reduce humidity around the plant canopy.
  • Strategic application of registered fungicides during periods of high disease pressure.
