The disease is caused by the fungus Paraphoma radicina, which is a significant soilborne pathogen. It primarily targets the root systems and the crown of host plants. By colonizing these tissues, the pathogen disrupts the vascular system, preventing the effective uptake of water and vital nutrients, which characterizes the condition as a severe root rot.

The host range for this pathogen includes various vegetable crops, sugar beets, and specific ornamental plants. Seedlings are particularly susceptible, as the infection can lead to pre-emergence or post-emergence damping-off, which causes uneven crop stands and significant economic losses for agricultural producers if left unmanaged.

Key symptoms include the appearance of dark brown or black lesions on the root tissues. These lesions eventually expand, leading to tissue softening, necrosis, and decay. Affected plants typically show signs of stunting, wilting during periods of heat, and leaf chlorosis. In advanced stages, the secondary root system is almost entirely destroyed, making the plant unstable in the soil.
