Parapyrenochaetosis is a fungal disease caused by pathogens belonging to the family Parapyrenochaetaceae. These microscopic fungi act as soil-borne parasites that predominantly attack the root systems of various plant species. The disease is primarily categorized as a type of root rot, which obstructs the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water, often leading to systematic decline.

A variety of crops, particularly vegetables and certain ornamental species, are susceptible to this infection. Parapyrenochaetosis poses a significant risk to nursery plants and greenhouse crops, where high plant density and constant contact with soil allow the fungus to spread rapidly from one root zone to another.

Typical symptoms involve the browning and eventual necrosis of the roots. As the infection progresses, the root cortex softens and begins to decay, often resulting in a dark, discolored appearance. Effective protection requires integrated management: ensuring optimal soil structure to prevent water stagnation, practicing strict crop rotation, and utilizing healthy, certified planting material. Additionally, the application of biological antagonists, such as Trichoderma species, has shown promise in suppressing the pathogen's growth and protecting the root zone.
