Description

Parastagonospora nodorum is a destructive fungal pathogen that causes a disease commonly known as Stagonospora nodorum blotch (SNB) in cereal crops, particularly wheat. As an ascomycete fungus, it causes significant damage to the photosynthetic area of leaves, stems, and glumes, which disrupts the grain filling process.

The disease primarily targets wheat, but it can also affect barley and other related grass species. Parastagonospora nodorum is widespread in regions with moderate temperatures and frequent precipitation during the growing season. It thrives in high-humidity environments, which facilitate the production and dissemination of its spores.

Early symptoms appear as small, water-soaked spots on lower leaves that enlarge into irregular, light brown lesions. As the infection progresses, these lesions develop a chlorotic halo. The defining diagnostic feature is the presence of pycnidia, which appear as tiny black pepper-like dots embedded within the dead tissue of the lesions.

The life cycle of the pathogen begins with primary inoculum surviving in infected crop debris, soil, or contaminated seeds. Spores are then dispersed by rain splash or wind to healthy host tissue. Consecutive infection cycles can occur rapidly under wet conditions, leading to severe epidemics during the stem elongation and heading stages.

The impact of this disease on agricultural production is substantial, resulting in reduced yields and diminished grain quality. To mitigate the risk of infection, an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy is essential. Recommended actions include:
