Description
Passalora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Passalora concors, is a fungal disease that primarily affects potato crops. It is classified as a foliage pathogen that disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, often emerging during the later stages of the growing season.
The disease is most commonly found on potatoes, but it can occasionally infect other solanaceous hosts. As a pathogen, it thrives in environments where host plants are densely planted, allowing for rapid spread between individuals through airborne spores.
Symptoms of the infection include the development of diffuse, pale spots on the undersides of leaves. Over time, these spots develop a fuzzy, greyish-violet fungal growth consisting of conidiophores and conidia. Severe infections result in leaf chlorosis, premature leaf necrosis, and widespread defoliation, which severely stunts plant growth and reduces overall yield.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind currents, splashing rain, or mechanical contact. The pathogen overwinters as mycelium or conidia on infected crop debris and in the soil, acting as a primary inoculum source for subsequent seasons.
Economic losses are associated with the reduced tuber size and quality resulting from a compromised canopy. Effective control strategies involve an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and chemical intervention:
- Implementing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Removing and destroying infested plant material post-harvest.
- Applying systemic fungicides at the early onset of visible symptoms.
- Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
