Passalora leaf spot is a plant disease caused by the fungal pathogen Passalora nattrassii. This fungus acts as a specialized parasite, primarily affecting crops within the Solanaceae family, and is recognized as a significant threat to agricultural productivity in both greenhouses and open fields.
The primary host plants susceptible to this pathogen include eggplants, tomatoes, and other related solanaceous species. The fungus targets foliage and fruit, causing localized tissue death which interferes with the plant's metabolic processes and significantly reduces the marketable yield of the affected crops.
Symptoms typically begin as small, discolored spots on leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning dark brown or black with a greyish-olive fungal growth on the underside, especially in humid conditions. In severe cases, extensive defoliation occurs, leading to a significant reduction in photosynthetic capacity.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity (above 80%) and warm temperatures are critical for the growth and spread of Passalora nattrassii. The spores are primarily disseminated through water splashes during irrigation, wind, and movement of contaminated farm equipment. The fungus survives unfavorable seasons within infected crop residues left in the field.
Effective management of this disease requires an integrated approach. Essential strategies include strict sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infected plant material, maintaining proper greenhouse ventilation to lower humidity, and rotating crops. Chemical control, including the application of broad-spectrum fungicides, is often necessary to manage high-pressure outbreaks.
