Description
Passalora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Passalora robiniae, is a common foliar disease affecting various species within the genus Robinia. As an ascomycete, this pathogen primarily attacks the leaves, leading to aesthetic degradation and reduced vigor of the host trees. It is a significant concern for nurseries, botanical gardens, and urban landscaping where locust trees are planted for their ornamental value.
The visual symptoms of the infection include the development of localized lesions on the leaf surfaces. Initially, these spots are pale or chlorotic but expand and develop into brown or dark necrotic patches as the infection progresses. Under conditions of high humidity, olive-colored fungal fruiting structures become visible on the undersides of the infected leaves, indicating active sporulation of the pathogen.
The development and spread of Passalora robiniae are closely linked to meteorological conditions, particularly prolonged periods of warm temperatures and moisture. Rain splash and wind serve as the primary dispersal mechanisms for the fungal spores, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through the tree canopy. The fungus survives the dormant season primarily in infected leaf litter, which acts as the primary inoculum source for the following spring.
The impact of this disease is mainly reflected in premature senescence and shedding of foliage, which weakens the tree's health. While the disease is rarely lethal for mature specimens, chronic infection leads to stunted shoot growth, reduced carbohydrate storage, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, such as pests or drought. For young plants in nursery settings, heavy infestation can severely affect their commercial viability.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the impact of the pathogen:
- Sanitation remains the most critical measure; all infected leaf litter should be collected and destroyed at the end of the season to remove overwintering structures.
- Application of protective fungicides during early leaf development can prevent the initial colonization of leaves.
- Thinning of tree canopies to improve air circulation helps reduce humidity levels around the foliage, making the environment less favorable for fungal development.
- Monitoring nursery stocks for early symptoms allows for timely intervention and prevents large-scale outbreaks in production areas.
