Patellaria is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Ascomycetes, which causes bark diseases in various woody plants. While these fungi are often considered saprotrophs, they can act as opportunistic pathogens on trees that are already stressed by environmental factors, mechanical damage, or age, leading to bark necrosis.
The disease affects a wide range of deciduous trees, including oak, maple, and various fruit-bearing species. The fungus primarily targets the periderm and cortex tissues. By colonizing damaged areas, the mycelium breaks down the bark structure, which can eventually lead to the girdling of smaller branches and stems if the infestation is severe.
The most distinctive symptom of Patellaria infection is the presence of small, disc-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia. These are typically black or dark brown in color and appear scattered across the surface of the bark. Affected areas may show signs of cracking, peeling, or a darkened, water-soaked appearance that distinguishes it from healthy bark.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and prolonged moisture are critical for the development and dissemination of the pathogen. Poor air circulation within the tree canopy or close planting intervals provide a perfect microclimate for spores to germinate. The disease spreads primarily through windborne spores or rain splash, especially in autumn or mild winter months.

The economic and ecological harm caused by Patellaria is largely related to the physical degradation of the bark, which serves as the tree's primary defensive barrier. By compromising this layer, the fungus creates portals of entry for more aggressive secondary pathogens and wood-boring insects, ultimately reducing the overall lifespan and vigor of the host plant.
