The order Patellariales includes a group of Ascomycete fungi that are primarily associated with the degradation of plant tissues. In agricultural environments, these organisms often act as opportunists, colonizing dead or dying wood, although they can occasionally invade the tissues of weakened plants under stressful conditions.
The causal agents belong to the class Dothideomycetes. The type of disease is characterized by surface necrosis and the development of distinct fruiting bodies. These fungi produce diagnostic features known as apothecia, which appear as small, disk-shaped, carbonaceous structures on the host surface.
Various tree and shrub species, particularly those in orchard and ornamental settings, are susceptible to colonization by Patellariales. These pathogens preferentially attack hosts with compromised bark integrity, such as those suffering from environmental stress, insect damage, or improperly treated pruning wounds.
Symptoms include the appearance of small, hard, black disks on the bark, often surrounded by necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the area around the fruiting bodies may exhibit cracking, peeling, or darkening of the bark, eventually leading to branch dieback and restricted sap flow.
