The Paxillaceae family consists of a group of fungi belonging to the order Boletales. It is crucial to clarify from an agronomic perspective that these fungi are predominantly mycorrhizal partners for various tree species rather than phytopathogens. Labeling them as a plant disease is a common misconception, as they do not attack living plant tissues of crops.

As symbionts, these fungi establish a mutually beneficial relationship with trees, enhancing the absorption of water and minerals. Their biological cycle involves the development of mycelium in the forest soil and the production of sporocarps. In agricultural fields, they are rarely found unless the area is adjacent to woodlands or contains significant amounts of decomposing organic wood matter.

The hosts for Paxillaceae are typically forest trees such as pine, spruce, birch, and oak. They are absent in traditional row-crop systems because they require specific ecological niches with high soil acidity and organic forest debris. They do not parasitize wheat, corn, soy, or other common agricultural commodities.

The appearance of Paxillaceae is marked by the growth of fleshy mushrooms with lamellae, usually in colors ranging from yellow to brown. There is no economic damage associated with their presence. They do not cause wilt, rot, or yield losses, and they do not require any chemical control or fungicides within integrated pest management strategies.

Since these fungi are beneficial or neutral, no protective measures are needed. However, if their presence in a nursery or silvicultural area is undesirable, managing soil moisture levels through improved drainage and ensuring the clearing of deadwood will effectively limit their growth. Maintaining a clean and aerated field environment is the best way to prevent the colonization of such fungi.
