Pea mosaic

Description

Pea mosaic is a widespread viral disease that affects various leguminous crops, severely impacting their physiological health and overall yield. The pathogen, typically identified as the Pea mosaic virus (PMV) or Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV), belongs to the potyvirus family and spreads systemically throughout the host plant, disrupting vital cellular functions.

The primary crop affected by this disease is the field pea (Pisum sativum), although the virus is capable of infecting a broad range of related plants, including broad beans, lupins, and lentils. This wide host range complicates disease management, as the virus can persist in various plant reservoirs within the ecosystem.

Symptoms of pea mosaic manifest as a characteristic light and dark green mottled pattern on the foliage. In addition to discoloration, affected plants frequently exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe deformation of the pods. These visual indicators often appear early in the season, signaling a significant decline in the photosynthetic efficiency of the crop.

The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids, which act as vectors by feeding on infected plants and subsequently moving to healthy ones. Another major pathway for the spread of pea mosaic is through infected seeds. Once the virus enters the plant population via contaminated seeds, the local aphid population facilitates rapid secondary spread throughout the field.

The economic impact of pea mosaic includes reduced seed quality and lower grain yields, making effective management essential for agricultural productivity. Key protection measures include:

  • Utilizing certified, virus-free seed lots for planting.
  • Implementing strict weed control to eliminate alternate plant hosts.
  • Monitoring and managing aphid populations using targeted insecticide applications.
  • Establishing spatial isolation between new crops and existing perennial legumes.
  • Prioritizing the cultivation of resistant or tolerant pea varieties.
